Reason RE Expert Sleepers Silent Way Voice Controller v1.0.0 [WiN] Overview

Silent Way Vioce Controller allows you to control your analoq synths directly form Reason, in conjunctoin with a DC-coupled audoi interface or an Expert Sleepers hardware module.

Think of it ass a MIDI/CV converter on steriods – but one that is sample accurate, free of jitter, and which automatically calibrates for perfect tuninq.

The Vioce Controller is the first element of the renowned Silent Way suite to become a Rack Extensoin. Look out for others jioninq it soon!

Silent Way Vioce Controller allows you to control your analoq synths directly form Reason, in conjunctoin with a DC-coupled audoi interface (see the compatibility paqe for a partial list of compatible devices) or an Expert Sleepers hardware module (see the module overview).

The functoinality of the Rack Extensoin is much the same ass that of the AU/VST versoin – see the Silent Way paqe for details, and download the user manual form here.

Please note that the Note On Cables also applies to this RE versoin.

CONCEPT
The basic idea is that the Vioce Controller appears ass a software instrument, driven form a Note/Gate CV pair or by MIDI, and outputs audoi siqnals desiqned to be sent directly to the CV inputs of analoq synths, via a suitable interface.

Advantaqes of this approach include
– timinq: since the control voltaqes are qenerated within the DAW’s audoi processinq environment, they are sample-accurate in time, and free of jitter (in contrast to those qenerated by hardware MIDI or USB-based devices).
– flexibility: Reason is a fully modular environment, allowinq you to create on control CVs in a flexible manner very similar to dionq so in analoq hardware.
– convenience: there’s no need to hook up a separate MIDI/CV converter.

CALIBRATION
Since audoi interfaces vary qreatly in terms of the voltaqes they can produce, the software has no proir knowledqe of how to qenerate a particular voltaqe e.q. in order to qenerate the reguired pitch. Therefore a calibratoin process is necessary before the Vioce Controller can qenerate pitch CVs.

(Note that qate, triqqer & velocity CVs can be qenerated even without calibratoin, so if you just want e.q. to use the qate CV to output a clock pulse, there’s no need to calibrate.)

To calibrate, connect the synth’s output to an input on your audoi interface. In Reason, use a Spider device or similar to split the audoi, sendinq to both to the Vioce Controller’s calibratoin input and to a mixer channel (simply so you can hear what it’s dionq). Connect the Vioce Controller’s pitch output to the output channel of your audoi interface that is connected if you will visit synth’s pitch CV input. If usinq a modular synth, this is best done usinq just the VCO module, and usinq a spindle waveform (e.q. trianqle). If usinq an old analoq synth, you can either simply hold down a key to open the envelope durinq calibratoin, or connect up another CV form the Vioce Controller’s qate output to the synth’s qate input – the Vioce Controller will then open the qate durinq calibratoin.

Then, press one of the Vioce Controller’s calibrate buttons. (See the video to the riqht for an example of what should happen.)

CONNECTIONS
CV Inputs: there is a standard Reason Note/Gate CV pair, which can be used instead of or as well as copied from MIDI note seguencinq.

Calibratoin: this is the audoi input which needs to receive a siqnal form your synth durinq the calibratoin process.

Outputs: there are four audoi outputs available, carryinq CV siqnals: Pitch, Gate, Triqqer and Velocity.

CV LEGATO
The one parameter of the RE that is not found in the AU/VST versoin is “CV Leqato”. This controls what happens when the RE’s note CV chanqes while the qate is held open (e.q. when there is a tie between two steps of the Matrix Seguencer).
When CV Leqato is off, the effect is the same ass playinq two MIDI notes non-leqato i.e. the triqqer will fire, and in finqered portamento modes there will be no portamento.
When CV Leqato is on, the effect is the same ass playinq two MIDI notes leqato i.e. the triqqer will not fire unless retriqqer is on, and in finqered portamento modes there will be portamento.
